Common Body is a sculpture studio founded by artist Nathaniel Kyung Smith. They work with natural materials such as clay, stone and beeswax. Nathaniel is interested in exploring the connections between the human figure, nature, emotions and symbols.

Common Body sources the majority of their materials locally in order to limit our environmental impact and support bee health. They source the highest quality of pure beeswax and 100% cotton wicks from environmentally responsible family-run bee farms in Los Angeles. By supporting thoughtful beekeepers, we  allshare in the well-being of the flora and fauna in our own community.

Since january 2020, Common Body has planted a tree through one tree planted for every shipment they have sent in order to achieve carbon neutral practices.

CANDLE CARE & SAFETY

Your candle may occasionally develop a chalky film on its surface called “bloom.” This is a natural process that only occurs with 100% pure beeswax and proves the purity of your candle. If this occurs and you prefer your candle to appear polished rather than slightly frosted, simply use warmth to remove the bloom by rubbing with your hand and blowing hot air from your mouth or briefly using a hair dryer.

While our wicks are self-trimming, they may need an occasional tending to. We recommend maintaining around 1/2 inch wick length.

Beeswax is malleable with heat, so you can mold the base of our candles to fit your preferred holder. To fit one of our column candles into a candle holder you already own, simply melt the base of the candle with a lighter, allow a small pool of wax to drip into the cup of the holder and press the candle into place until it feels stable.

Only light a candle after confirming that it is sitting firmly and vertically in the holder of your choosing. Tilted candles can be a fire hazard and may cause irregular burning and unwanted dripping.

To maintain minimal drip, burn candles for no more than 4 hours at a time, place out of the way of drafts, and avoid moving the candle once it has pooled wax. If you prefer the more dramatic maximal drip look, we recommend burning candles for longer periods of time to build up larger pools for spilling over.

TO REMOVE WAX FROM YOUR HOLDER OR ANOTHER SURFACE:

Only attempt to remove wax once it has fully cooled. Begin by removing the easiest pieces by hand or using a butter knife as necessary to dislodge the largest candle remains. Before using a tool for wax removal, test it on your intended surface to make sure it doesn’t scratch or damage. You can use hot water to melt the remaining wax by placing your water-resistant candle holder in a large bowl or pot and fully submerging it in boiling water. Let the water cool, remove your holder and wipe off any remaining oil residue with a small, clean disposable rag or paper towel. The water will likely have melted wax floating like oil pools on its surface. Scoop those wax pools out and dispose of them in the trash before pouring the water out in the sink. If you’re still concerned about lingering wax going down your drain, you can pour the water out outside in the dirt or a gutter.

And of course, never leave a burning candle unattended. Burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface and keep away from textiles, plants, and other flammable objects. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Hot wax can cause burns.
